The maypole tradition

In Bavaria, one of the favorite traditions is the "Maibaumaufstellen". Every year at the first of May, maypoles are deployed in the center of villages. The maypoles are decorated unique and look really beautiful.
The funny thing is that in each village, it is allowed to steal the maypole of another community. That's why the trees have to be guarded very well. If the maypole gets stolen anyway, it has to be ransomed with beer and snacks.
Especially women are looking forward to the first of May with great tension. There is the tradition, that boys can set their girlfriend a small maypole to show their love. If a man sets the same woman the third maypole, it is like a proposal of marriage.
Eine der beliebtesten Traditionen in Bayern ist das Maibaumaufstellen. Jedes Jahr am ersten Mai wird in vielen Orten ein großer Maibaum aufgestellt. Der Maibaum ist aufwändig geschmückt und sieht wunderschön aus.
Jedem Ort ist es erlaubt, den Maibaum von anderen Gemeinden zu stehlen. Deswegen muss der Baum gut bewacht werden. Gelingt es einem Ort aber trotzdem den Maibaum zu stehlen, kann er mit Bier und einer Brotzeit wieder freigekauft werden.
Frauen erwarten den ersten Mai oft mit großer Spannung. Es gibt die Tradition, dass Männer ihren Freundinnen als Liebesbeweis einen kleinen Maibaum vors Haus stellen. Wenn ein Mann dergleichen Frau zum dritten mal einen Maibaum stellt, gilt das als Heiratsantrag.
